Every now and then, mobile OS is advancing to new stages. Each single update adds new and advanced API to the OS. Whether its Android, iOS or Windows. With this, every developer feels to add the newest feature possible to the apps in their respective ecosystem. WhatsApp is one of them.
WhatsApp is constantly adding new features. Recently, it added Video calling and animated GIF support.
But sad news for those who are using older OS than mentioned! They are ending support for them!
The firm will soon stop supporting several Android devices, iOS, & Windows. Android devices with OS version 2.2 and older, iOS devices with version 6 or lower and Windows Phone 7 will not be able to use the anymore.
However, Symbian OS and BB OS will be supported till June 30, 2017.
According to Google’s own dashboard, Android 2.2 is running on just 0.1 percent devices. The effect will be very much limited just because most Android users are either using Marshmallow or Lollipop or KitKat.
Whereas, Apple’s November Dashboard reports that only 8 percent devices running iOS version older than iOS 9.
However, Windows Phone is a rarely used, dead OS from the beginning. Above that, WhatsApp is stopping support on Windows Phone 7.x devices. Maybe someday, they will stop supporting Windows Phone 8.1 which is used by most of the users.
According to WhatsApp, Symbian and BB OS “don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future.”
Right now, the app has 1 billion monthly users, and constantly adding new features to the app.
